Great Big Letter

Collage of an old yellow car in front of a night sky in the wilderness

I have a friend named Flink. We send each other stuff in the mail. In 2012, I started work on an enormous letter to him. I call this project the Great Big Letter. Various parts of the Great Big Letter were written at various times between 2012 and 2015.

The bookbinding process.
The postcard above — written in late 2011 and announcing a hot new missive arriving in your mailbox sometime before 2014 — assumed a lengthy but somehow still wildly optimistic timeframe. This estimate was based on a previous Very Long Letter I had written to Flink over the course of several months in late 2010.

The Very Long Letter of 2010 was somewhere north of 100 pages. The Great Big Letter contains over 160 pages of text, and almost as many pages of collage. It was a different writing process.

The end result was a disgusting-looking ball of paper. So I scanned every page, printed the letter, and neatly bound it. The finished product is a thick brick of text that doubles as a doorstop.

The finished product, a thick brick of text, sitting on a table next to a coffee mug for scale.

I’ve posted a few snippets from the letter on Fully Psyched, and will likely be posting a few more every now and again. You can view all these excerpts by going to the category page for the Great Big Letter.

Photo of an Iowa sunset

When I lived in Iowa, I lived in a rural area. When I moved to Seattle I couldn’t take the soundscape with me, so I recorded it. Here it is: bugs and birds and frogs and the occasional distant truck. Enjoy.

Interviews at the Charles M. Schulz Museum

Statue of Charlie Brown greets visitors at the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center

On August 10, 2012 I visited the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, California. While there, I had the privilege of interviewing Jeannie Schulz, the widow of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, and Lisa Monhoff, the museum’s archivist.

I’ve previously posted these interviews on the website, but wanted to create a playlist that organizes all the audio content into a single source. (The original posts, along with photos, can be found here and here.) Here’s the single-source playlist:

Industry secret

Postcard collage of bird and Hells Canyon with text that says Legendary Adventures Require Legendary Flavor. Reverse side of postcard collage showing Hells Canyon and bird.

Message on postcard:
Shannon and Ann — It was good to hear from you! Sorry I can’t make it to your summer party this year. The dogs are good and I’m working as a hiking guide here at Grand Canyon. You might be wondering, then, why I’m sending you a postcard of Hells Canyon. I’ll let you in on a little secret. Sometimes, when Grand Canyon is full, we’ll substitute in another canyon. Hells Canyon is a popular replacement, but we’ll also use Cataract Canyon, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Canyon de Chelly, Waimea Canyon, and the Columbia River Gorge. Every now and then we’ll do a fjord or a crevasse, but they’re a little tricky. Visitors almost never notice, though.

Radically honest Facebook updates

Postcard collage of a happy dog at the coast. Big text at the top says "Hypothesis: Radically honest Facebook posts ease anxiety." Small text at the bottom says "I am a dog"

Message on postcard:
Hey man — It feels good to finally get this off my chest. It’s been so awkward dodging all the questions. “Why do you sleep on the floor?” “How come there’s fur everywhere?” “Is that a bone you’re chewing on?” Well, I’m a dog. There, I finally said it. God, that feels better.
