Found on mantle: A postcard

August 28, 2012 by campbell Leave a Comment

I’m housesitting for my friend Tom while he honeymoons. There’s a postcard of mine on the mantle above the fireplace. I sent it to him shy of a year ago. I enjoyed re-reading the message, so I thought I’d post it here.

Llama in front of the Andes

Message on postcard:
Yo! TW! What’s up my homeslice! Greetings from Santiago, Chile. I fly home tomorrow. Most of my time here was spent making friends with the llama you see on this postcard. His name is Scruffy Sweaters, Junior. But don’t be fooled. His cute name hides a tragic past. During The Cosby Show‘s broadcast run, over 5,000 llamas were cruelly exploited to provide raw wardrobe materials for the program’s eponymous star. But today with your help we’re changing things. Friends used only 200 llamas during its last three seasons, and today New Yankee Workshop is the first TV show to be certified llama safe. Will you support our valuable work?

Sincerely,
Mike

A few more postcard collages

August 28, 2012 by campbell Leave a Comment

These are postcard collages that went to my Kickstarter project backers at the forty dollar level. They also got a two-page letter and some zany crap I found while traveling.

Postcard collage of a critical car
Hey Reid — How are you? This postcard is from Redwood National Park, but I bypassed that particular destination on this trip. The last time I was there a drunk guy with no license and no insurance drove into my truck. And then when I got home my girlfriend broke up with me. This time around I saw the redwoods farther south, just off 101 on the “Avenue of the Giants”. This trip has been way better, with the exception of the fact that a pig tore up my legs and sent me to the hospital.
Postcard collage of a strange creature in the redwoods advertising five pro tips
Hi Pat — Here are five pro tips that I try to abide by:

1. ABC — Always be coureous!
2. Be good to dogs.
3. Drive at a safe and reasonable speed.
4. Eat three square meals a day.
5. Shower every morning (still working on this one).

I hope you’re having a good summer, and I hope you like this postcard that Amanda ordered for you!

Postcard collage of eohippus and old country house
Caption on back of postcard: Eohippus measured about 18 inches in length. Its back was curved and its legs and neck were short.

Hello Cheyenne! Isn’t this tiny prehistoric horse just cute as the dickens! This postcard pretty much describes the last few years of my life. I got rid of all my genteel trappings — country house, a horse barn built for non-cute, non-miniature, non-prehistoric horses — and traded it for … I don’t know what. Driving around in a van? Holy shit, it’s terrifying that this actually constitutes an upward trajectory to my life.

Postcard collage of Camaro with top secret answers
Hi Kelly — It’s August 19th, and I’m camped out in Trinity National Forest in Northern California. I found a little stand of big old trees with a clearing underneath, and I’m spending the weekend here. A couple folks have cruised by on four-wheelers, but otherwise I’ve had this place completely to myself. My friend Tom gets married in Portland next week … I don’t know why I just told you that.
Postcard collage of Pervez Musharraf contemplating space rescue in front of bison
Hi Kim! I hope you’re having an excellent summer. Mine has been peaceful and relaxing, with a couple glaring exceptions. In Santa Rosa this last week I met a crazy guy on a broken motorcycle who asked me first how he could end all the pain, and then to beat him up. I suspect the motorcycle was just out of gas, but that he was tweaking too hard to realize that fact. But overall mostly things have been good.

North Coast, continued

Drove to a place called Usal Beach yesterday. It’s in a state park that was closed due to California budget cuts, but locals have removed the barricades and continued to camp there in spite of its official status. The road in was quite scenic, but the campground and beach had a bit of a trash-strewn, Mad Max vibe going on. So I decided to push on north and camped last night at Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The executive summary: Big trees are big. Right now I’m in Fortuna, an apparent stronghold of the West Coast’s unique hippie-but-also-redneck hybrid subculture.

Been having a fun time writing two-page letters for my Kickstarter project, getting away from collage and spending more time with pen and ink. Scanned a big bunch of postcards this morning, and will be transcribing the text this weekend.

Back on the road

Back on the road today. Left the Bay Area yesterday after getting the staples removed from my legs. Did a short-ish, four mile hike at Salt Point State Park, where I was half convinced that every noise in the woods heralded the arrival of an angry pig bent on finishing the job. Now I’m sitting in a coffee shop in Fort Bragg, working on letters. The drawing above is a cameraphone shot from a little “Hippies vs. Loggers” comic strip I drew to illustrate the local scene.

Out of the hospital and walking

August 1, 2012 by campbell 6 Comments

Hi folks — greetings from sunny Santa Rosa, California. I’m out of the hospital and walking, and just wanted to share a few pictures and give a bit of an update on what actually happened to me. On Saturday I was attacked by a wild boar in Sonoma County, and I’m lucky to still be here.

I’ll write more about the attack when things have settled down, but the short story is that I arrived in Sonoma County late on Friday night so that I could visit my family, who was in the area for my sister-in-law Kelsie’s Ironman triathlon. After I wished her good luck at 5 a.m. on Saturday morning, I was out with the dogs around dawn when we were attacked by a wild boar. Skillet was jarred but unscathed, while Kaida and I are both lucky to be alive. Both of my legs were lacerated to the bone, and I was released from the hospital just yesterday. I’m spending the next few days at a Santa Rosa hotel with my mom, who has been kind enough to prolong her stay be a few extra days in case my recovery turn shaky.

If you want to see what my legs looked like after surgery, click here. It’s not too bad, but it’s also not for the squeamish.

But as you can see from the pictures below, both Kaida and I are feeling much better.

Photo of me in a wheelchair before leaving the hospital.
I was capable of walking out — I’d already wandered across the entire hospital looking for a drawing that Charles Schulz had left behind on a wall during a stay here more than ten years ago — but the hospital staff insists on wheeling you out, presumably for liability reasons.
Photo of my dog Kaida and I recovering together after the boar attack.
Here’s Kaida and I in bed together after we were released from the animal and human hospital, respectively. She gets a warm compress on her neck that she seems to regard as a spa treatment that she deserves because she’s special.

One more thing: Charles Schulz used to live in the area, and when he stayed in the hospital in the 1990s, he left a Snoopy cartoon on one of the walls. When the hospital was remodeled, the wall was cut out and preserved behind glass. I wanted a goal to walk toward when I was first using my newly stitched-up legs, so I decided to wander the hospital until I found the drawings. I apologize for the poor quality of the cameraphone photos, but I thought I’d share what I found here. If you’re wondering what exactly is going on here, Snoopy is trying to use an incentive spirometer.
